rakim – it’s been a long time, i shouldn’t have left you….
but i had to! things have been crazy. i mean c-r-a-z-y. a lot has happened, but unfortunately a lot of is too personal to post on my blog at this time. it will be posted one day, but not quite yet.
i made a trip down to our nation’s capital. fun town. clean town. i saw the white house, the capital, the cannon building, the floor of the lower house (we sat in the gallery and listened to them argue), a slew of congressmen/women and president obama!. that was a loooong day. but absolutely worth it. after all these years of visiting D.C. i hadn’t taken the time to do the serious tourist thing.
it’s amazing to think about the history of the city. it literally is all about uncle sam. everybody works for the government! and unlike many cities that grew organically for practical reasons, like their proximity to seaports, D.C. was built to be our nation’s capital… at least that’s what i got from the promo video they showed us at the capital. the truth is probably more like some native americans were already living there but the land wasn’t heavily inhabited and it was a good strategic location – close to ports for the trade of goods… and slaves… read more at the smithsonian magazine site.
being in d.c. at such a lively time, i couldn’t help but to pay close attention to current political issues. we did our exploration on friday. the tea bagger kettle boiled over on saturday and a never ending line of immigration reform supporters took over the capital on sunday. the immigration march was actually much larger than was reported. my guess is there were more of them than the tea people, but their peaceful march didn’t make for good reality tv.
i left d.c. on an amtrak train back to nyc. i love the train! it was so relaxing and i had just enough room to be comfortable. one of these days i’ll treat myself to business class on the acela train… one of these days…
thanks to streaming video, i was able to watch the healthcare vote online once i got home. i had both c-span and cnn up on my screen (i’m notorious for having too many windows open at once). i don’t think i had ever streamed c-span before, but the user experience was great. then i watched the president make his remarks on the white house website. it was pretty cool to see the places i had just visited on… well, internet tv? lol
needless to say, i’m keeping a very close (maybe too close) eye on the recently passed health care bill. without going into detail about my personal beliefs on the issue, i think it can objectively be said that actions by some opposed to the bill have crossed jumped way over and past the line. the issue has become exhausting for me. so, i’ll leave you with these little ditties. 🙂
and in honor of d.c. go-go
